Lothal
One of the renowned cities of the Indus Valley civilization, Lothal is situated in the region of Bhal in the Gujarat state since 3700 BCE. The city was discovered in the year 1954 and from 13 Feb 1955 – 19 May 1960, it was excavated by the ASI (Archaeological Survey of India). Lothal’s dock connects the city to the Sabarmati River, which is an ancient course on the trade route of the Saurashtra peninsula and the Sindh Harrapan cities. At that time, what we today call as the Kutch desert used to be a major part of the Arabian Sea. Moreover, it was one of the major centers of trade in the ancient era. Trade of gems, beads, and several other precious ornaments to far reaching Africa and West Asia was happening. Techniques used by the Harrapans for bead making and their developments in metallurgy 4000 years ago have not been surpassed until now.
The city of Lothal is located in proximity to the Saragwala village in the Taluka of Dholka within the district of Ahmedabad. The city today lies in 6 km of propinquity to the Lothal – Burkhi railway station on the renowned railway line of Ahmedabad-Bhavnagar. Besides this, the city is connected to Bhavnagar, Dholka, Rajkot, and Ahmedabad (85 km/ 53 mi) by all-weather roads. However, Bagodara and Dholka would be counted as the closest cities. In the year 1961, archeologists got interested in resuming the excavations, owing to which trenches have been found on the western, eastern, and northern mound flanks. This brought the nullah (ravine, gully) and the inlet channels that connected the river to the dock in major focus. The things that were unearthed in this excavation included a township, the dock, marketplace, and a mound. Now, the Archeological Museum stands firm adjacent to these areas. And, the eminent collections of the Indus Valley excavations lies in the museum as a testimony to the most advanced civilization of India.
